Betty’s RV Park

It’s hard to believe our month-long stay at Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville, LA is 2/3 over. We’ve had so much fun, meeting new friends as well as reconnecting with those we already knew, hanging out and enjoying daily happy hours together. Here are some of the highlights. When we arrived, Betty had already decorated the place for Mardi Gras.

Notice the mannequin behind Don and Sam?

She got “upgraded” a day or two later, and Robert had to help adjust the upgrade!

Every day we gather for happy hour at 4:30 (except Saturday when it’s 5:00). There are always enough goodies to serve as a light supper so we never worry about cooking an evening meal.

Betty’s Florida room barely contains all the people and decorations, but we always manage to find a place to sit.

And laughter abounds! Peggy is one of the “regulars” whom we continue to enjoy.

Betty herself is happiest when she’s enjoying time with the RVers.

January 24 was Sam Kidd’s 75th birthday, so wife Carolyn served Margaritas and baked a cake.

There were lots of other yummy foods to share as well.

Naturally, we gathered to watch the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. Don made his great pork-stuffed won ton.

He and some of the other guys helped position a TV for viewing (behind Carolyn – sorry I didn’t get a better picture).

Don and I usually have lunch out every day, enjoying some of the many restaurants we’ve been to before, and exploring a few new ones. Villager’s Café in nearby Maurice is one of our faves, especially for their Po-Boys.

Suire’s (pronounced ‘sweers’ to rhyme with ‘cheers’) Cajun Restaurant and Grocery in Kaplan is a great place for gumbo.

Other places we like are Bon Creole (for Po-Boys) and Rio Bravo (for Mexican food), both in New Iberia, Poche’s (for gumbo) and Café Des Amis (for Zydeco music and breakfast on Saturday – haven’t been there yet this visit), both in Breaux Bridge, and Dupuy’s, Shucks, and Comeaux’s Café, all for great local Cajun/Creole seafood in Abbeville.

One afternoon Betty’s niece Monica asked some friends to come demonstrate a few dance steps and give us some pointers for the upcoming Mardi Gras Ball.

IMG_4255

Diana and Robert were among those brave enough to try out the steps.

Most of us watched from the sidelines, but will probably take a turn or two on the dance floor Friday night.

I love the T-shirt Bev was wearing. Read it carefully.

It’s from an Italian/Pizza restaurant!

We’re still trying to find the time and a good weather day to go kayaking, and have picked out the spot on the Vermillion River in Palmetto Island State Park.

To the west of Abbeville are lots of flooded fields for growing crawfish, alternated with rice.

Our weather has been mostly warm and sunny, with a few cool/cold days and some rain. This week, with many Mardi Gras parades and other activities, it’s very nice. We went to a great parade in Scott, but this blog is too long to add pictures of it, so it will have to wait for another time. In the meantime, Laissez les bon temps roulez! Let the good times roll!
