Margaritas, Missiles and Masks

Don and I served as VCRs for the Escapees Chapter 45 (Phoenix area) rally in Amado, AZ recently. This is a fun group of people, and we enjoyed spending time with them.

De Anza Trails RV Resort is a great place for a rally, and the owners can provide meals as a package deal. For $180 for 2 people, we got 3 nights of 50 amp full hookup RV parking, use of the clubhouse, dining room, patios, swimming pool & spa, exercise room, etc. A margarita party followed by a Mexican dinner was provided the first night, pancake breakfast the next morning, Mexican breakfast the following morning with a choice of steak or chicken for dinner, and a continental breakfast for the departure morning.

The margarita supply never ran out.

Friends old and new.

The Mexican dinner was served by volunteers in the Chapter. These three made good use of their Italian souvenir aprons from the shop at Michelangelo’s David sculpture. (Facebook friends have already seen this pic – it was too good to save!)

We were free to explore the area on our own during the days, so Don and I visited the Titan Missile Museum. Our guide was Marge Humphrey, who served as Commander of this site for many years.

Eighteen of these Titan II missiles were stationed around the area near Tucson and Davis-Monthan AFB during the Cold War era, with a total of 54 spread throughout the U.S. This is the only one available to the public. It was a fascinating educational experience, and I recommend you visit the web site to learn more, and to visit in person if you’re in the area.

The rally was held over Halloween, so naturally there was a costume competition. Here are a few of the entries.

  1. Looks like it was a FUN rally! And I LOVE those costumes, especially the first one--reminds me of an Old English sheepdog--which I love! Clever and creative folks! Nice to hear you are having so much fun out there! Hugs,
